week 3-1, assignment #2

My philosophy on Gaming

From the learner’s point of view, I would say that I love having games in the classroom; it is such a fun way of leaning! I think most learners would say the same. Which student does not like playing games? I think that every student would agree with me that learning through games is also much more engaging than learning the old fashion way of teacher lecturing or reading from a text book.

From a teacher’s point of view, I would say that we must be very careful when using games for teaching purposes. For sure, I agree that gaming should be incorporated into the curriculum, but we have to be mindful that the games are enhancing the learning and not minimizing the learning. This means that teachers must be choosy in game selection; choosing games that actually teach something. In order to do this teachers must do proper research on gaming. The best way to know if a game will actually teach something is if the teacher tries it themselves! Once a teacher choses an appropriate game, to ensure learning they must make learning objectives/goals to make it purposeful. IF this is all in place, usually the game will be educational and the students will gain from it.
